UK drivers could save themselves hundreds off the cost of necessary repairs for faults found in the MOT test by using a handy new tool.
Today, the new MOT rules come into force which introduces a raft of changes and will also make it harder for diesel vehicles to pass, with stricter limits being imposed.
Faults found in the MOT test will be ranked as either Minor, Major or Dangerous, with the latter two needing immediate repair.
Often repairs can be expensive and on average they cost drivers £143, according to WhoCanFixMyCar.
To assist drivers slashing the repair bill the company has created an online calculator which will estimate the cost of repairs and found how much it costs to repair those specific defects in the local area.
They believe that in total it could save UK motorists up to £1.8billion off the cost of repairs.
MOT testers will focus more on steering systems, lights and brake pads, with a steering box leak, worn brake pads and blown out bulbs all resulting in a test fail.
The new MOT laws will put more pressure on motorists to have any unsafe defects repaired either instantly if the vehicle has failed the test or quickly if advisories or minors have been given.
Al Preston, co-founder of WhoCanFixMyCar.com, said: “I’m sure many drivers are nervous about the new MOT legislation coming into effect, however the stricter guidelines will ensure the safety of all motorists in the UK, which can only be a good thing.
“My advice would be to have your car checked over by a professional before the MOT, so you’re not surprised by any defects that can leave you carless for a while.
“We’re hoping the MOT test cost calculator will serve as a really helpful tool for drivers, so they can plan for how much various repairs will cost in their area, and more importantly, they have the knowledge on what it should cost!”
