Migraine symptoms – what is an aura?

An aura will occur in about a quarter of migraines, and creates a strange visual effect.

It is one of the most recognisable symptoms for sufferers, and usually an indicator that a tide pain is on the way.

However, it is possible to have an aura without pain later.

The aura is the second phase of a migraine, according to Migraine Trust, coming after the premonitory or warning phase.

After an aura comes the headache or main attack stage.

The aura causes bizarre visual effects in the migraine sufferer.

These can include “dark spots, coloured spots, sparkles or ‘stars’, and zigzag lines,” according to the Migraine Trust.

Although the aura is known mainly for its visual effects, this is not the only sign that you can have aura.

The NHS said: “Migraines can severely affect your quality of life and stop you carrying out your normal daily activities. Some people find they need to stay in bed for days at a time.

“However, a number of effective treatments are available to reduce the symptoms and prevent further attacks.”

“Numbness or tingling, weakness, and dizziness or vertigo (the feeling of everything spinning) can also happen,” the Migraine Trust add.

As well changes to eyesight, an aura can also cause changes in brain function – including memory changes and feeling confused.

“More rarely, partial paralysis or fainting,” can be caused by the aura.

An aura can last between five and 60 minutes.

Migraines affect around one in five men and one in fifteen men in Britain and experts have estimated more than 190,000 migraine attacks happen every day.

Dr Clare Morrison, GP at www.MedExpress.co.uk said: “Migraines are described as moderate to severe headaches and they are fairly common, affecting around one in five British women and one in fifteen British men.”

Dr Morrison said emotional and and physical triggers are usually the most prominent for regular sufferers of migraines.

These include stress, poor quality of sleep, anxiety and a difference in the patterns of shift work.
