Melania Trump, 48, is married to US President Donald Trump, 70, but is is reported to not always agree with his policies.
After Donald lifted an order to separate migrant children from their parents at the US/Mexico border in Texas, his wife Melania was spotted boarding a plane to go and visit the affected children.
However, Melania’s outfit choice didn’t go unnoticed, as she boarded the plan bound for Texas wearing a jacket with the slogan “I really don’t care, do you?” emblazoned on it.
The jacket was a wardrobe mishap from the First Lady, who often speaks out about her support for children and children’s charities.
Brushing off the controversy she received by wearing the jacket, Melania took to Instagram to post a heartwarming message of support for the affected families at the US border.
A mother of one herself, Melania captioned the post: “Today’s visit to #Texas to spend time with children & thank the many hardworking individuals helping to care for them was very meaningful.
“Thank you to Secretary Azar for traveling w me today & the care you are giving these children in such a difficult time.”
She accompanied the touching message with a photo of her, wearing a different, cream jacket, meeting with children.
The photos show the children all smiles while meeting Melania, who wore tight white jeans and white trainers with the changed jacket.
Showing the warm welcome she received, one photo posted by the 48-year-old shows her shaking hands with a man in front of a painting of the US flag, with “Welcome! First Lady” written on it.
Some of Melania’s 1.7 million Instagram followers jumped to her aid to also defend her look, with one commenting: “She is a great lady. Classy lady….. God Bless”
Another wrote: “Loved your jacket. ..great way to get a message across to the media.”
The unusual jacket looked out of place in the wardrobe of the First Lady, who is known to impress in the sartorial stakes.
The jacket cost $ 39 (£39) and is from high street fashion retailer, Zara.
Despite the possibly inappropriate choice of the words emblazoned on the jacket, Melania’s spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham took to her own Twitter to defend the First Lady’s fashion choice.
She posted: “Today’s visit w the children in Texas impacted @flotus greatly. If media would spend their time & energy on her actions & efforts to help kids – rather than speculate & focus on her wardrobe – we could get so much accomplished on behalf of children. #SheCares #ItsJustAJacket”
Her husband Donald Trump also came to Melania’s defence on Twitter, posting: “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”
Melania and her husband are reported to be visiting the UK on 13 July, and are even expected to meet the Queen.
There is one royal rule she must take care to follow – although former First Lady Michelle Obama did not manage it.
It is against traditional etiquette to touch the Queen upon meeting her.
