Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33, have confirmed they will get married on the 19th May 2018.
Kensington Palace released a statement via Twitter today.
It said: “His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle will marry on 19th May 2018.
“Today’s announcement follows earlier confirmation of the month of the wedding its location at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.”
The 19th May is a Saturday, meaning Britain will definitely not enjoy a Bank Holiday for the occasion – something many Britons had previously hoped for.
Superstitious folk may be surprised by the choice of wedding date, as the old saying goes: “Marry in May, rue the day.”
Stephanie Coontz, a history and family studies professor at The Evergreen State College, and author of Marriage, a History: How Love Conquered Marriage, told Global News: “It was considered a bad omen to marry in May back in Roman times because May was the month of the Feast of the Dead, and three days of that month were devoted to cleansing the evil dead spirits.”
And an old Celtic poem also warns against marrying on a Saturday – with many other days of the week considered a better choice.
It reads: “Monday for wealth, Tuesday for health, Wednesday the best day of all,
“Thursday for losses, Friday for crosses, And Saturday no luck at all.”
Despite tradition stating the date chosen could be better, theirs will still be one of the most watched weddings in the world.
One the elements those watching will be most excited to see will be Meghan’s wedding dress – and Express.co.uk exclusively revealed the former actress has been spotted having fittings with one designer.
A source revealed to Express.co.uk Meghan has had fittings at Erdem – the British Canadian designer who is currently the frontrunner to design her special dress.
The source revealed “beautiful” Meghan recently went into the Erdem studio for a dress fitting, although they did not elaborate on whether it was for her wedding dress or a gown for another occasion.
The expectation is certainly on Erdem to design the dress, with Ladbrokes placing the odds at 2/1.
This is because of his links to both the UK and Meghan’s adopted home of Canada. He was born in the Commonwealth country in 1976 to a British mother and Turkish father, moving to London to pursue his fashion career in the 90s.
