Sam claimed that he had watched previous winners of MasterChef and believed his cooking was “more modern” and he enjoyed “molecular gastronomy”.
But, when it came to whipping up an impressive dish, he was left stumped as he complained there weren’t any ingredients he could use in the pantry.
He told host Greg: “I’m struggling. I fancied a big piece of beef or maybe some wagyu.”
The 21-year-old went on the explain that he often cooks with a water bath and tries to incorporate as much science as possible in his dishes.
While Greg was intrigued by his style of cooking, John was outraged that he had the audacity to complain about the ingredients on offer.
“Sam said the ingredients in our market weren’t the ingredients he is used to cooking with,” the presenter fumed. “I don’t know where he’s shopping. Has he been shopping on Mars?
“There’s plenty of ingredients in there to make a wonderful dish.”
Sam served up a tomato salad, tomato water and a trout, which left the judges far from impressed.
John fumed: “It’s really hard to judge a tomato salad. You said there wasn’t the ingredients in the market for you to use.
“We make sure it is stacked with everything a MasterChef contestant needs.”
Unfortunately, Sam was not given the chance to prove himself as a molecular gastronomist as he was knocked out of the competition after his tomato salad fell short of expectations.
MasterChef UK continues tomorrow on BBC One at 8pm.
