Martin Lewis reveals how YOU could save £200 a year on your electric and gas bill

Martin Lewis, 45, returns to his Martin Lewis Money Show on ITV tonight to explain how to save £200 on your gas and electric bill this January.

Speaking to co-host Angellica Bell, 41, he revealed his ‘bill-busting’ tips in the special show to save money in the winter month.

Many will still be suffering from the expense of Christmas, and are looking for a way to cut their bill costs as a new years resolution.

Martin Lewis has revealed how you could save hundreds of pounds simply by switching gas and electric suppliers.

He explained on his show: “If you haven’t switched in the last year you’re almost certainly paying too much.

“Standard tariffs are the most expensive on the market so could save you 20 per cent or £200 a year.

“Use market comparison sites and put in your bill details to find out the cheapest in your area.

“It will estimate your usage for you.” Guests on the show explained how they had even saved as much as £350 a year simply when choosng a different provider and it all depends on who they change to.

The typical cost of energy and gas bills a year come in at £1,132. Martin found that the cheapest on the market was as little as £807 a year instead.

The main guest of the night saved money on her water, gas, electric, phone and broadband and cut a whopping £1,120 a year.

Anyone looking to change this winter could save a lot more than they realise.

Martin Lewis has previously explained to those looking to save: “Winter is the highest-use energy period, and on average most people are overspending by over 30 per cent on their (often £300 a year) simply due to being on the wrong tariff.”

For people who haven’t switched within the last twelve months could be spending a lot if choosing “one of the big six – British Gas, EDF, E.on, Npower, Scottish Power and SSE”.

Comparison sites will always show the best deals on a list so even the second or third choice could save more than current prices.

He also explained how to find the cheapest tarrifs. Martin has previously said: “It always depends on where you live and how you use, so it’s always worth doing the check on a comparison site.”

Even new suppliers aren’t always the best choice: “A supplier launches they launch the cheapest tariff on the market, lots of people flood into it and they don’t have the structure for it and they get really bad customer support and people say switching is a waste of time.”

In September, Martin explained that comparison sites such as Compare the Market, Go Compare and uSwitch could hide the best deals from their customers to make profits.

He told viewers to also use sites that are “Automatically whole of market by default”. This means they show all the deals upfront and do not promote the deals that they make commission from.
