The drama, which also stars Louis Garrel and Alex Brendemühl, is about a woman, Gabrielle (Cotillard), a woman trapped n a loveless marriage.
She ultimately meets and falls for another man when she is sent away to the Alps to treat her kidney stones.
Sadly the production – which is called Mal De Pierres in France – failed to charm critics, achieving only a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
But Cotillard as ever turns in a great performance – even if it’s this scene in particular that seems to have caused the biggest splash.
The star, 41, is seen as her sexually frustrated character finally becomes intimate with a new lover.
The role earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Lumières Awards and the César Awards, where the movie is also up for Best Film.
After some festival appearances last year, it’s finally out on general release in the UK this summer.
Last year Cotillard was swept up in unwanted headlines when she starred alongside Brad Pitt in Allied.
With the film’s arrival unfortunately coinciding with Pitt’s split from Angelina Jolie, Cotillard was forced to deny any romantic entanglement with the Hollywood A-lister.
Putting such speculation to rest for good, she then confirmed that she and er partner – the actor and director Guillaume Canet – are expecting their second child.
From The Land of the Moon arrives in the UK on June 23.
