Luther season 6 spoilers: Does THIS confirm series WON'T return? Here's what you missed

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Luther season 5 and topics of sensitive nature.

Luther season five concluded tonight in a jam-packed episode full of action, suspense and surprises.

The final scene saw DCI John Luther (played by Idris Elba) battle it out with Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), trying desperately to convince her the fight with George Cornelius was over.

But in an epic plot twist no viewer expected, Alice fell from the top of some scaffolding straight to her death, leaving Luther at the top in utter shock.

However, does Alice’s downfall predict the end of Luther and the series altogether?

It comes after lead actor Idris, spoke about the show’s future and how the producers were looking into moving the series from television to the big movie screen.

During a conversation with Radio Times, the actor who plays the maverick detective revealed: “I don’t think we’re going to do too many TV versions of it; I think the next step is to make a film.”

This certainly makes sense because season five’s storyline could easily translate into a movie.

“We’ve got a skeleton of an idea for a film, [but] I’m not allowed to say too much but I can say that this season has the film very much in its sights,” Idris continued.

“If there is a film, then it will be somehow connected to this season.”

Those watching the drama at home took to Twitter to discuss the concluding episode and in particular made reference to Alice’s exit.

Many fans noted it was very similar to a scene in season one hinting the show has come full circle.

One said: “So #Luther finished exactly how it first began. Luther was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of Henry Madsen who fell from a heigh. Alice has fallen the exact same way with Luther being arrested again. #FullCircle” (sic).

“It all ended with the same scene it started with #Luther,” another added.

A third theorised: “Hmm, let’s see. The end scene with Alice was a copy of the very first scene of Luther. The symbolic removal of the coat. This is the end. Shame. #Luther.”

“My heart is broken. Alice is dead; just like Henry Madsen in S1. Luther is arrested for Halliday’s murder! How can @bbcluther do this to my heart, my Alice/Luther loving heart?! Nah, this is too much! #Luther,” someone else wrote.

If the BBC were to consider a six television series of the fan-favourite show, what could possibly be in store for Luther?

After his arrest, it is possible he will be found guilty for his involvement in several murders.

Whilst he didn’t kill anyone directly this season, several people were put into compromising positions, which ultimately saw their death because of the decisions Luther made.

Take George Cornelius’ (Patrick Malahide) son Alistair, who was killed by Alice.

Luther could have stopped that death if he had just captured and arrested Alice.

In turn, Alice’s actions caused George to turn on Luther and take DS Benny Silver (Michael Smiley) as bait to lure the detective towards a hitman.

If Benny hadn’t been captured, he would have never been in a position to offer his life up for killing.

In turn, Luther wouldn’t have then decided to seek revenge on George and go after the hitman.

Although it was in fact George who killed the hitman it seems Luther will be blamed.

Furthermore, DS Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku) was also innocently killed by Alice as a way of getting back at Luther for not finishing off George.

Viewers have presumed Luther will be held responsible for his colleague’s death therefore there is a great possibility Luther is going to serve time.

Will viewers see his struggle on the inside or will he escape and make a life on the run?

Luther season 5 is available to catch up on the BBC iPlayer.
