When will Luther season 5 air?

The BBC hasn’t announced an airdate for Luther season five as yet, however the crime drama is now in production.

Season three consisted of four episodes and filming began in November 2012 and was broadcast was in July the following year.

Similarly, season two – which also had four episodes – started production in late September/early October 2010 and premiered in June 2011.

Going by these timescales, there’s around a nine-month turnaround from filming to transmission, which means season five could be hitting screens at the end of 2018.

Speaking about returning to the show as John Luther, Hollywood A-lister Idris Elba said: “It’s good to be back in London, back in the coat.”

A video was also released by the BBC on Twitter with Elba, 45, in costume on set wrapping up after the first day of filming.

The A-lister was seen wearing the iconic Luther coat with grey shirt and red tie as he was getting into a car.

He cheekily told the camera: “First day back on the set. I’m going home already.”

What will happen in Luther season 5?

The show is known for its gritty tales of murder in London, which DCI Luther is brought in to investigate.

Throughout there is a recurring theme of home invasion as the killers go into the place that victims feel the safest. 

Season five has been written again by creator Neil Cross, who said: “We missed John Luther. We missed some old friends. 

“And we wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling series of Luther there’s ever been. So that’s what we’ve come back to do.”

According to a synopsis from the BBC for Luther season five: “When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther must once again confront the depths of human depravity. 

“As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror. 

“But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice. 

“Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him — and change John Luther forever.”

How many episodes are in Luther season 5?

Luther has varied in length since season one which had six episodes.

While season four – which aired in 2015 – only consisted of two instalments due to a lack of time and cast availability. 

Season five has been confirmed to have four episodes each an hour long – like seasons two and three.

Who will be Luther season 5?

Elba will be returning as DCI John Luther with another case on his hands.

While Black Mirror and Kiri star Wunmi Mosaku will be by his side as new recruit DS Catherine Halliday.

She will replace Game of Thrones actress Rose Leslie, who portrayed Luther’s partner DS Emma Lane.

Returning cast also includes Luther veterans Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk, Michael Smiley as Benny Silver and Patrick Malahide as George Cornelius.
