Luther season 5 spoilers: Fans CONFUSED over epic plot twist – did you see?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Luther season 5 episode 1 along with topics of a sensitive nature.

The fan favourite police drama series returned to television screens earlier this evening, much to the delight of BBC One viewers who had waited years for its comeback.

Those watching at home tuned in to see the first instalment of season five’s gripping thriller.

And DCI John Luther (played by Idris Elba) was back reprising his role, trying to find a psycho-sexual murderer who was on the prowl for his latest victim.

Tense and harrowing scenes throughout the episode finally saw Luther locate the killer, until a shocking twist occurred which left everyone furiously questioning what had really happened.

In rapid time, Luther managed to track down the masked man, but in a sudden turn of events the killer took the knife to his own throat and killed himself.

But in typical Luther fashion, the show writers had another twist up their sleeves.

After fans were led to believe the one who had just killed himself was a murderer, it turns out he was a cover.

Shortly after, Vivien Lake (Hermonie Norris) opened the boot of a car, and began angrily beating a man who was lying down.

“You didn’t have to cut me. Are you listening to me?

“Look what you did to my arm. That is the last time I humiliate myself for you,” the therapist screeched.

The man in question was dressed the same as the killer, with a mask around the back of his neck.

It can therefore be presumed Vivien and her husband, which was later confirmed when a photo of their wedding day came into shot, are in on the murders together.

Many took to Twitter to the moment, with one saying: “I’m confused, is he dead or not? #Luther.”

“WAIT WHO WAS IN THE BODY BAG?!?!? #Luther,” another asked.

“So the real killer is her husband?! WTF? #Luther,” a third commented.

One said: “Totally confused & very scared now. #Luther.”

“Well that took an interesting twist #Luther,” a viewer wrote.

“What?! I did not see that coming! How exciting #Luther,” another enthused.

Viewers will have to tune in to tomorrow night’s episode to see what happens next and whether their theories are correct.

Luther airs Tuesday to Friday this week on BBC One at 9pm.
