Bailey was killed by her partner Ian Stewart and found in his secret cesspit alongside her dog Boris.
This week, Stewart was jailed for 34-years after being found guilty of drugging and suffocating Bailey, supposedly in a bid to inherit her £4 million fortune.
“She was so smart in some ways and so dumb in others,” Janet, 70, said of the writer during the ITV show. “Not dumb, that’s a rather cruel thing to say – but naive.
“It’s even as if she didn’t want to think he was capable of that.
“And, of course, now we know he’d been drugging her with sleeping pills, and she’d said she felt tired all the time and didn’t know why.”
She added: “This man was so cold and calculating. Not only did he kill her, he killed her dog too.”
Loose Women fans were outraged by the remark and didn’t hesitate to say so on Twitter.
“Disgusting discussion on #loosewomen. How dare JSP call #helenbailey ‘dumb’ for being murdered by her abuser. She was abused. It was abuse,” fumed one critic as another asked: “Did Janet Street Porter @loosewomen really just call Helen Bailley DUMB? #disrespectful. choose your words sensitively JSP (sic).”
This particularly disgruntled viewer fumed: “Absolutely disgusted that Janet Street Porter called poor Helen Bailey ‘dumb’ then goes on & contradicts herself #disgracefull (sic).”
And a fourth raged: “Just flicked the TV on and Janet Street Porter on Loose Women appears to be blaming Helen Bailey for getting herself killed.”
Loose Women airs at 12.30pm on ITV.
