Denise was on the ITV programme to discuss her new book I Let Him Go, a memoir about her son and the events after his death.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of James’ murder, in an event which rocked the nation.
The toddler was tragically killed in 1993 by ten-year-olds Robert Thompson and John Venables after they took him from a shopping centre when he was with his mother.
Denise went on to have three more sons after James’ death: Michael, Thomas, and Leon.
She revealed finding out she was pregnant with Michael had “saved her” after the loss.
Denise told the Loose Women panel: ”When James was taken I just wanted to be with him, but then I found out I was having Michael and if I wasn’t having him I don’t think I’d be here.
“I was a mum and I didn’t have any kids, but when Michael was born I was a mum again.”
She continued: “Sometimes I would feel a tug on my nightdress when I was cleaning and would turn to see what Michael wanted and he wasn’t there.”
When Denise found out it wasn’t Michael, she said she believed it was James trying to contact her.
Denise went on to recall the heartbreaking moment James was snatched when she turned her back for just a moment.
“As I turned to get my bag and my purse to pay, I looked down and he’d gone,” she said.
However, she did say that the book had been a positive experience for her, bringing back happy memories of James.
She told them: “The memories that are poured into the book are all mine now to keep.”
Denise said she had stopped “torturing” herself for the abduction, telling the Loose Women that it would not have been fair to her other children.
“I wanted them to have normal lives, I wanted them to grow up.”
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
