Sleep is as integral to general health and wellbeing as eating, drinking and even breathing, according to Dr Hilary.

But there are a number of factors that can impact sleep during the night.

These include stress, partner disturbance, snoring and young children.

Speaking on Lorraine, he revealed, as part of the show’s Sleep Revolution campaign, he revealed what you can do to get a good night’s sleep.

A lack of sleep can cause long term mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and even obesity, heart disease and diabetes, says Dr Hilary.

But the TV doctor listed four things you can make sure to for a disturbance-free rest.

  1. Avoid coffee at night
  2. Turn off technology a couple of hours before you go to sleep – light from the screen can have a negative impact
  3. Don’t watch a thriller or box set before bed that might persuade you to stay up
  4. Get outside in the morning – exposure to natural light in the morning can help you sleep in the evening

A poll conducted by the show revealed just one hour extra sleep can help you live longer, look better and improve memory.

A massive 75 per cent do not get eight hours of sleep a night and more than half, 55 per cent would choose sleep over sex.

But making some simple changes to your day-to-day routine can help you get a better night’s sleep.

One of these is not to take long naps during the day.

There are differing opinions about day napping. But Christabel’s general advice is to avoid it altogether because it can disrupt your circadian rhythm.

She said: “She said “If you do nap during the day, make it no longer than 20 minutes.”
