How many triangles are in this picture? Brain teaser DIVIDING the web, can you solve it?

Quora is a hive of activity day-in, day-out. But today especially there is a hubbub around the social site after one user posed a simple question.

A user posted a yellow and pink picture of a triable split into sections with just six lines.

Simple to count and work out how many triangles there are, right?

Wrong – it’s a complicated mathematical equation and hundreds of people have taken to the web to try and figure it all out.

The Answer Wiki tells us that there are 24 triangles, 25 if you count the signature in the bottom right.

But Martin Silvertant, an expert in Mathematics, left a lengthy explanation as to why there could be a few more sneaky triangles out there.

He said: “There are 25 triangles in the picture. Quite right. And then there’s the 25th triangle, which is the counter of the ‘A’ of ‘Asky’:

“If I want to count all triangles, I should count all referents to triangles, including words. But note that the image contains the plural ‘triangles’. So how many should I count?

“Actual triangles, 0. But when it comes to approximations of triangles, then anywhere between 27 (24 + 1 + 2) and ∞.”

Did you get that?

Another user added: “I just used 6X4 after I found the pattern, but still counted them. I got 24.

“Unless you’re one of those people who count the word as well, which will make it 25.”

And Kaylee Middlebrook, student, gave a more simplified answer.

She said: “I’m pretty sure I’m wrong, but I see 27 triangles. (Recounts triangles) Yup, I see 27. Look for smaller triangles that are inside the big one. It’s a pretty fun exercise.”

How many triangles can you see in this brain teaser?
