Honda has revealed the hotly anticipated Civic Type R’s full specs ahead of its general release.
It is more powerful, better looking and certainly more crazy than its predecessor.
Honda has not played it safe with the design and the Civic Type R is one of the bolder hot hatches in its class.
There is method to the exterior design and a lot of the reasoning and functionality behind its look is down to aerodynamics.
The Type R includes a smooth underbody, front air curtain, slim rear wing and vortex generator at the trailing edge of the roof line.
Inside the car is the iconic red and black interior which has a 25 year legacy. The interior is finished in a suede-effect material on the bucket sports seats.
Central to the dashboard is Honda’s seven-inch CONNECT colour touch screen display which houses the infotainment system.
Navigation is controllable through this screen and it is also compatible with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The rear-view camera is also displayed in this screen.
On the GT spec car a wireless phone charging point and access to USB and HDMI ports is a standard feature.
Boot spaces is bigger than you would believe too with a 414-litre rear luggage space.
Honda has been engineered from the ground up, designed for both on the road and track performance.
Powering the Type R is a 2.0-litre turbocharged peril engine which produces a potent 316bhp and 400Nm of torque.
This will take it from 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 169mph, making it the fastest accelerating car in its class.
To add to the driving experience and advanced Dual-Axis Strut Front Suspension system reduces torque steer which enhances on the limit cornering and steering feel and high-performance brakes have been added to manage that power and torque effectively.
Ryuichi Kijima is the lead chassis engineer for the Honda Civic Type R. He explains where the all-new model shows the most significant improvements around the Nürburgring compared to the previous generation car.
“The cornering speed is higher because the car features a wider track and tyres, a longer wheelbase, new multi-link suspension in the rear and optimised aerodynamics that improve stability,” said Kijima-san.
There are a new selection of driving modes to chose from – Comfort, Sport and +R – each tailoring the suspension, steering and throttle response from the car.
The Type R’s body frame is 16kg lighter than the previous variants and torsional stiffness has improved by 37 per cent.
Honda has also included the Sensing suite of active safety technologies which include: Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Lane Keeping Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Assistance and Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control.
Higher spec Type R Gt Models also benefit from Blind Spot Information including Cross Traffic Monitor, dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming rear view mirror, Honda CONNECT with Garmin Navigation, wireless charging pad, 542-watt 12-speaker audio system and LED front fog lights.
A few months ago the new Civic Type R claimed the front-wheel drive lap record at Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 7min 43.8sec.
2017 marks 25 years since the introduction of the very first Honda Type R vehicle.
Production of the new Type R is anticipated to start in summer 2017 at Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) in Swindon
It will go on sale in June with prices sat trying at £30,995, increasing to £32,995 for the GT version.
