High blood pressure affects more than 25 per cent of all UK adults, according to the NHS.
The condition, which is also known as hypertension, is described as a reading of 140/90mmHg or above.
There’s no way to telling if you have high blood pressure, so it’s important to check your blood pressure at least every five years, if you’re over 40 years old.
If you have extremely high blood pressure, you could have chest pain, severe headaches, or difficulty breathing.
But, you could lower your risk of high blood pressure by adding these cheap supplements to your diet.
Garlic
Garlic is one of the best natural remedies for high blood pressure, according to nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.
“Aged and black garlic are even more powerful as their sulphur-containing components are converted into derivatives with greater antioxidant properties and can lower blood pressure even further,” said Brewer, on her website MyLowerBloodPressure.com.
“They also have the advantage of being less smelly and more socially acceptable.”
Taking garlic for hypertension could lower your blood pressure by an average of 6.71/4.79mmHg, studies claimed.
Some people may respond better to those when taking garlic supplements.
Spirulina
Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that could work as a natural remedy for high blood pressure, said Brewer.
It contains a number of nutrients, including amino acids, antioxidants, carotenoids, vitamins and minerals.
The supplement could improve the elasticity of arteries, she said.
Spirulina could lower blood pressure by about 6/5mmHg, according to studies.
Patients taking the supplement could also lose about 5kg of weight over three months, it was claimed.
Fish oil
“Fish oil is an important natural remedy for high blood pressure,” said Brewer.
“Fish oil is a rich source of two long-chain, omega-3 fatty acids, EPA [eicosapentaenoic acid] and DHA [docosahexaenoic acid].”
The body converts omega-3 fatty acids into substances that reduce inflammation, she said.
Adding more omega-3 to your diet may reduce the stickiness of your blood.
It could also prevent arterial hardening, which is key cause of hypertension.
CBD oil
Cannabidiol (CBD) oil could lower your blood pressure after a stressful situation.
The supplement, which can be taken as a capsule, gummy sweet, drops or oral sprays, helps to lower patient anxiety and stress, said Brewer.
Regularly taking CBD oil could slash your blood pressure by an average of 6/3mmHg.
“The researchers suggest these findings are due to the anti-anxiety and analgesic effects of cannabidiol [CBD] and may also show direct, beneficial cardiovascular effects in relaxing blood vessels.”
