HBO isn’t leaving anything to chance when it comes to one of its biggest series, Game of Thrones. The network will be shooting multiple endings for season 8 — the series’ next and last season, which is set to air in 2018 or 2019. (Yeah, we’re still not happy about the ambiguity of that premiere date either.) HBO president of programming Casey Bloys dropped the news when he was speaking to a group of Moravian College students in his hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. “I know in Game of Thrones, the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens,” Bloys told the audience. “You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.” This is done largely to throw hackers off the trail and prevent leaks to fans. The Morning Call, which reported the news, reminds us that “other hit shows — including AMC’s Breaking Bad and HBO’s The Sopranos — have kept their endings secret by shooting different endings.” So now we’ll all be as clueless as Jon Snow.
