Haunting Installation in Paris Department Store Inspired by Architectural Ruins

Italian artist and set designer Edoardo Tresoldi works with transparency that is created with the illusion of mesh and various industrial materials in order to “transcend the time-space dimension and narrate a dialogue between Art and World, a visual summary which reveals itself in the fade-out of physical limitations.” His latest piece, in the Paris department store Le Bon Marché, is called Aura, inspired by architectural ruins and the philosophy of Walter Benjamin. Aura features Tresoldi’s signature installation style and encompasses multi-floor space stemming from the store’s high glass ceiling. The dome shapes reference the Italian Renaissance and what Tresoldi calls “the shape of the soul.” He writes, “The work is a reflection on the passing of time and the transformation of matter, from classical forms to contemporary content.” Take a closer look at Tresoldi’s ghostly installation, which we first learned about on Dornob, in our gallery.

A U R A is a site specific installation taking place in Paris from September 6th to October 22nd within the prestigious @lebonmarcherivegauche . The Italian artist joins Tadao Ando, Ai Weiwei and Chiharu Shiota, who have exhibited their works here in the recent years. Inspired by Neoclassicism and the Italian Renaissance palazzo, Tresoldi has developed a reflection on the passing of time and the transformation of matter, from classical forms to contemporay content, through the concept of architecture in ruins. A suggestion outlined with the construction of two domes, one in wire mesh and one in corrugated sheet metal, a material that he uses here for the first time. Fragments of the past and an integral part of the Western imaginary, between form and anti-form, ruins are imbued with what Walter Benjamin has defined ‘Aura’, “the unique appearance of a distance”, the magical and supernatural force arising from their uniqueness.
