Will Gypsy return for season 2?
Gypsy has been slated by critics for its glacial pace and uneven writing.
As of July 10, it holds a 27 per cent approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, way below other recent Netflix releases Glow (96 per cent) and House of Cards season five (72 per cent).
Creator Lisa Rubin has admitted that there is “clearly a big disconnect between critics and audiences”.
She told Entertainment Weekly: “I’m so happy with the fan response.”
“We’re all excited about the possibility [of a second season]. It’s very much on the table. I’m sure they’ll announce it either way in a few weeks.”
Netflix has, as of late, become more ruthless with its original series.
In recent months it has cancelled The Get Down and Girlboss after their first seasons, and dropped the hugely popular Sense8 – which will now return for a two-hour finale after protests from fans.
What will happen in Gypsy season 2?
If the psychosexual drama does return for another season, Rubin says that it will “become more of a thriller”.
“Obviously, there’s a lot more escalation,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
“In those ways, it will potentially answer critics.”
“Jean is a mystery, and a lot of those questions about her past will be answered in a second season. We’ll start to understand her foundation and her motivations.”
Rubin revealed that Tom and Allison would be a “big thing we explore”.
“Tom and Allison could pose a threat to Jean,” she said.
“It could be that they’re in it together; it could be that Allison’s taken against her will. It’s ambiguous but could be explored in season two.”
Naomi Watts, who plays Jean, has said that she “could definitely be open” to a second run of the show.
“I had a good time with her,” she told Collider.
“I’m not completely on board with a lot of the decisions she made, but it’s fun to shift from a place of judgement to forgiveness.”
Who is in the cast of Gypsy?
Naomi Watts plays Jean Holloway, a therapist so bored of her own life that she begins to meddle in the lives of her patients.
Billy Crudup plays her husband Michael, an over-worked lawyer who grows suspicious of his wife’s strange behaviour.
Karl Glusman stars as Sam, one of Jean’s patients who is struggling to move on from his manipulative ex-girlfriend Sidney (Sophie Cookson).
Lucy Boynton plays Allison, a recovering drug addict who is being treated by Jean. Brenda Vaccaro is Claire, another patient, who is obsessed about her adult daughter Rebecca (Brooke Bloom)’s life choices.
Melanie Liburd plays Alexis, Michael’s PA, who Jean distrusts. Poorna Jagannathan completes the main cast as Larin Inamdar, a close friend of Jean’s and her fellow therapist.
