It seem no new blockbuster is complete without a rumoured gay subplot or character.
Most of the time, these turn out to be fleeting or inconsequential, although the recent Power Rangers movie made history by putting a lesbian hero front and centre with the revelation that the Yellow Ranger, played by Becky G, was gay.
Now the Guardians 2 director has revealed that his new movie already has a gay character in place.
Could it be Nebula or Mantis? How about big bad and blue Yondu?
After the recent controversies and internet storm over a gay subplot in Beauty and the Beast, filmmakers can expect much more attention on such matters, such as when Gunn spoke to the press at the Hollywood premiere of the new blockbuster this week.
He asked whether he would ever feature a gay character in the Marvel franchise and said: “Absolutely. I would love to be able to.”
But then he added the teaser: “We might have already done that.
“I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.”
It sounds like someting is implied rather than categorically revealed in the new movie.
Fans already know Drax had a wife, while Peter and Gamora are already romantically entwined, so who does that leave?
Without being speciesist it is rather difficult to imagine Groot or Rocket Racoon engaged in any sort of romantic or sexual liasons.
Which leaves the intriguing possibility of Karen Gillan’s Nebula. The actress has said we will see a slightly more vulnerable side to the terrifying character, but she might need to manage her anger issue before considering dating.
Likewise, Yondu (Michael Rooker) probably needs a little love in his life but that killer whistling stick (not a euphemism) of his, would probably put off most suitors.
We know very little so far about new character Mantis (Pom Klementieff). All will be revealed (or not) next week.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is out on April 28
