Dany Cotton, Commissioner of London Fire Brigade, and Richard Welch were among the heroes responsible for saving hundreds of lives when the West London building rapidly became engulfed in flames last month.
However, speaking to This Morning hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, Welch admitted that the lives you remember are the lives that were lost.
In a clip from tonight’s ITV documentary, titled Inside London’s Fire Brigade, Welch was seen saying: “We didn’t get everybody and we tried.”
In turn, Eamonn assured: “But Richard, people know you tried; they know you tried really hard.
“You saved hundreds of lives. Why do you dwell on lives that you didn’t save?”
“I think as a professional firefighter we did save a lot of people that night, but with any incident we go to, if we lose one person then that’s really difficult because that’s what we’re there for,” Welch explained.
“We’re there to save people’s lives and when we’re unable to achieve that, we find it really difficult to deal with.”
Cotton, revealed that despite not being required it enter the deadly inferno, she felt compelled to witness exactly what catastrophe she was sending her courageous team into.
“It was really important for me to go in there and see that and experience that,” she said.
Cotton enthused that she hopes tonight’s documentary will “spur on” recruitment into the fire brigade.
“I hope it’s going to help [recruit] people. I hope they look at the documentary, at what happened at Grenfell, and see what a fantastic job. I truly belive if you go to work and save someone’s life, there’s no better reward.”
This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am while Inside London’s Fire Brigade airs at 9pm on ITV on tonight.
