When Bake Off viewers tuned in to tonight’s celebrity special of the Channel 4 competition, which is in aid of Stand Up to Cancer, they had no idea what they were about to witness.
Former Apprentice aid Nick Hewer showed up to the infamous white tent in a suit much like one he would have been seen wearing alongside Sir Alan Sugar on the BBC reality series.
Joined by Loose Women panelist Stacey Solomon, singer Ricky Wilson and Diversity dancer Perri Kiely, Nick seemed out of place in his smart outfit, but it didn’t seem to affect him.
Speaking to the camera, Nick admitted that he’d spent his whole life avoiding the kitchen so wasn’t sure how his efforts would fare.
Yet viewers couldn’t avoid the bizarre choice, and took to Twitter to debate it.
One person said: “Nick wearing a suit to do Bake Off, it’s like Bake Off at 9am, back to the Apprentice at 2pm #gbbo.”
“Nick Hewer still baking in a suit #GBBO #classy @BritishBakeOff,” another joked.
A third agreed: “Also loving the fact that Nick is baking in a suit, shirt and tie! I like a formal baker! #GBBO #StandUpToCancer.”
While a fourth shared: “Nick wearing a suit baking is cracking me up.”
Fans continued to reveal their shock at the contestant, as one person noted: “I’ve just noticed nick is baking in a suit and tie like bake off at 9am and a meeting at 3pm #GBBO #SU2C.”
“Why is Nick wearing a full on suit and tie under his apron #GBBO,” another asked.
After a disastrous three rounds of bakes, Nick, 74, later confessed he was disappointed in his attempt to make a tribute to Countdown, which he presents.
He revealed: “Oh my god, they won’t renew the contract you know.
“This is awful I can’t bear to look at it.”
After some harsh comments from judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood however, Nick finally snapped after a stressful day in the kitchen.
“if you go in the kitchen for the first time at 74 you cannot expect to come out with a gold cup!” he declared.
Great Celebrity Bake Off continues Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
