The festive edition kicked off with hosts Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig announced that the first task would be completing a Baked Alaska Tart.
The bake in question has not been seen on the cooking competition since 2014, when #bingate caused a national panic.
Iain Watters famously presented a bin to judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry after his ice cream was removed from the fridge.
Diana Beard received huge backlash as she was believed to be the culprit by BBC viewers.
When the challenge hit Channel 4 screens this evening, fans of the show could hardly believe that they would attempt to repeat such a controversial challenge.
One viewer posted on Twitter in response to the choice: “Baked Alaska on the first task? Where was the trigger warning for Iain??”
Another raged: “NO NO NO I WAS NOT PREPARED. ICE CREAM. BAKED ALASKA (tarts) DID YOU EVEN WATCH IT BEFORE YOU BOUGHT IT C4?!?!?!”
A third commented: “Every time ice cream is involved on Bake Off I get flashbacks to the Baked Alaska meltdown of 2014.”
Great British Bake Off returned this evening and opened up with a hilarious performance of East 17’s Stay Another Day.
Noel, Sandi and Paul were joined by Prue Leith in oversized white puffer jackets as they mimed along to the Christmas song.
Great British Bake Off is expected to return to Channel 4 for a full series later in the year.
