Great British Bake Off 2017: The figures are out – you WON'T believe how many tuned in…

The broadcaster has today announced that the baking series launched with an incredible 6.5 million average and a 30.4 per cent share of the audience.

The massive numbers mark the broadcaster’s largest overnight audience in five years since the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony.

At its peak, Great British Bake Off managed to gain a whopping 7.7 million viewers last night.

The popular baking show was also a hit with the 16-34 year olds, giving Channel 4 their biggest peak time share with the age group in over 10 years.

Jay Hunt, the channel’s chief creative officer, said of the success: “The Great British Bake Off’s audience last night proves it’s still one of the country’s favourite shows.

“I am delighted millions watched the new team put 12 magnificent bakers through their paces.

“It’s the largest share of young audiences we’ve had for a show for over a decade,” he added.

However, The Independent reports that Channel 4’s revamp actually lost viewers – almost four million in fact.

Last year’s series, which aired on the BBC, reportedly gained 10.4 million overnight, which increased to 13.58 million throughout the week.

This comes as an early favourite has emerged to take the Star Baker crown, according to William Hill.

The betting agents have put Sophie as a firm favourite at 2/5, followed by Steven at 3/1 and Flo at 6/1.

Peter became the first to leave during last night’s opening episode after he failed to impress Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays on Channel 4 at 8pm.
