Some fans of Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins and the original BBC show struggled to warm to the Mighty Boosh comedian’s quirky brand of humour, but the new star of the culinary contest has revealed how he landed the most sought-after job in televison.
Speaking to TV Times magazine, Noel revealed: “I think they wanted Sandi definitely. Then they were looking for somebody to work with her and I was one of those people.”
Sandi added: “When we did our first audition together, I said straight away, ‘It’s him’. Noel turned up with a chair covered in bubble-wrap and instead of talking about Bake Off or filming stuff with cakes, we were just too busy chatting about why he arrived with a chair.”
Noel chuckled: “I turned up with this huge David Bowie chair as I was in the middle of filming Dave gameshow Taskmaster. I think Sandi thought, ‘Who is this guy who brings his own chairs to auditions?’.”
“I felt underprepared, if I’m honest!” admitted Sandi.
While the pair were relentlessly supportive of each other on the hugely popular show, Sandi confessed that it’s not always easy to form a lasting partnership with someone in the industry.
“But having said that, it doesn’t mean that any two comedians could create a double act,” she warned, as Noel continued: “Exactly. Having been in a double act with someone for a long time, it’s a 500-to-one shot that you’re going to have chemistry with someone. You never know when it’s going to happen; it’s a little bit like falling in love.”
Sandi joked: “Noel and I are the arranged marriage of television!”
Sandi has seemed to be enjoying her new role presenting the series, and in the last episode she shocked contestant Chris Geiger by making naughty comments about his food.
When Chris teased the blonde that his chocolate orange cookies were “sex”, she said matter-of-factly: “Sex? I wasn’t getting sex, but I was looking at you Chris.
“But maybe for that filling I’d be on the turn for you.”
