Last night the 26-year-old’s hit Shape Of You won Best Pop Solo Performance.
The news was a surprise to some as his competitors were stars Lady Gaga, Kesha, Kelly Clarkson and Pink.
However, Sheeran failed to show up to win the award, which allegedly resulted in boos from the audience when his name was read out.
People reported: “There were sounds of disappointment with slight boos from the audience when Ed Sheeran won for pop vocal performance over Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Lady Gaga and Kesha.”
Not only that, but some music fans and journalists expressed their outrage on social media.
One tweeted: “Naturally, Ed Sheeran wins with a Sia/TLC rip-off over four deserving women who all sang their faces off. #Grammys.”
Another said: “Kesha really did go through hell and back to release Praying and get nominated for a Grammy, only to lose to an Ed Sheeran song about how he likes a woman’s body over a Sia sample #GRAMMYs.”
While one added: “Still confused as to how @edsheeran won best pop song over @KeshaRose. She literally made a song about overcoming sexual abuse. #GRAMMYs.”
Meanwhile Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher won a posthumous Grammy.
The Princess Leia star won the Best Spoken Word Album Grammy for her autobiographical book, The Princess Diarist.
Based on her diary entries from the 1970s when she was filming the first Star Wars movie, the book was her last book before she died.
