Art Estopinan’s son has a similar condition to that of Charlie and, after being told his son would die within a month, he decided to take matters into his own hands and find some alternative treatment.
Although Charlie’s parents lost a legal fight to take their son to America for the same treatment, President Donald Trump and Pope Francis have both supported the parents, with the former offering to help the family.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain today, Art clashed with Dr Hilary as the pair argued over what is morally right for the little baby.
The 64-year-old doctor revealed that he was on the side of the courts, suggesting that trying to extend Charlie’s life will create more suffering.
However, the dad fought back, saying: “I’m not a physician but this doctor in the US, I trust him with my son’s life and he says there is a small chance.
“You are 100 per cent totally wrong. He is a human being and he deserves to live. What right do you have to play God?” Art asked Dr Hilary.
However, the Good Morning Britain regular fought back, saying: “Your heart says do what is good as long as it doesn’t extend suffering. Real parental love is letting go.
“[The Great Ormond Street doctors] are compassionate and experienced people and they don’t take the decision to turn off life support lightly.
“Charlie’s case was a lot more severe than Art’s son’s,” Dr Hilary added.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6am.
