Game of Thrones season 8: Catelyn Stark to RETURN as star drops cryptic clue?

Game of Thrones fans were horrified when Catelyn (played by Michelle Fairley) was murdered at the Red Wedding.

However, despite seeing her throat slit, many fans believed that like in the George R.R Martin novels the series is based on, she would return as Lady Stoneheart.

While Lady Stoneheart has yet to make an appearance, one star of the show may have let slip Catelyn could return.

Speaking at the Radio Times and BFI Festival, Gendry star Joe Dempsie teased that sometimes characters are cut out of the show for long periods of time for a reason.

Referencing his character, who was rowing for a good three seasons, he hinted show runners D.B Weiss and David Benioff keep characters out of fans minds in the hope they are forgotten so they can return with a bang.

“They were kind of saying they wanted people to forget about him,” he said.

“And, I think what they underestimated and I think what everyone underestimated, because of the rich mythology that George R.R. Martin has created, this world in which there are family trees which go back thousands of years and political implications of certain relations are so crucial and it leads to endless theorising.

“The longer a loose end is left untied, the more conspicuous it gets in Game of Thrones, rather than it just being something that fades from the memory.”

Thronescast host Jamie East, who was chairing the Q&A, then asked: “Lady Stoneheart?”

While fans may have hope Catelyn could return to help the Starks defend Winterfell as Lady Stoneheart, it seems unlikely.

CATELYN STARK DEATH: HOW DID CATELYN STARK DIE IN GAME OF THRONES?

Fellow cast member Jacob Anderson, who plays Grey Worm, simply replied: “Give it up!”

But perhaps fans shouldn’t give up quite yet. Many will remember Benjen Stark was absent from the series between season one and season six.

After he went north of The Wall ranging as part of the Night’s Watch, he failed to return.

Benjen later appeared in season six, as Cold Hands from Martin’s novels, to rescue Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) and Meera Reed from White Walkers.

He is seen once again in season seven when he also rescues Jon Snow (Kit Harington) from wights.

So, if Benjen could return from the dead, could Catelyn come back too? Fans will simply have to wait.

It comes as one fan revealed they believe Benjen knew about Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) true parentage and teased the information in season one, episode one.

Reddit user ryborg22 pointed out: “While Jon was growing up, Benjen is the only person who he had the correct relationship with.

“He’s still Uncle Benjen after Jon learned his true identity.”

Game of Thrones airs Sunday on HBO and Monday on Sky Atlantic. Fans can catch up on seasons 1-8 on Now TV.
