WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from episode two of Game of Thrones season seven.
Tonight’s episode Stormborn saw Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams) brought back together with her beloved direwolf Nymeria in a touching scene.
Viewers were left ecstatic when Arya was confronted with the pack of wolves in the middle of the woods led by Nymeria, and many took to social media to discuss the happy if fleeting moment.
One viewer posted: “It was. But now Arya and Nymeria are independets. Nymeria don’t/won’t follow Arya’s steps anymore. Nymeria it’s not more domesticated [sic].”
While a second Game of Thrones fan posted on Twitter: “Nymeria was HUGEEEEEE. Really wish her & Arya would be traveling back to Winterfell together, that would be nuts #GameOfThrones.”
A third wrote: “’That’s not you’. Nymeria has her life now. And Arya understands. Would love to see her come back though.”
As fans of the hit HBO fantasy series will remember, Arya was forced to part ways with her pet after Nymeria attacked Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) and Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) was left baying for blood.
Arya threw rocks at Nymeria in a bid to get her to leave and save her life, leading for the sword quite literally to fall on the direwolf Lady, who belonged to Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) instead.
During the short scene in the latest episode, Arya was seen asking Nymeria to come home with her to Winterfell and to be by her side once more, however the direwolf simply turned and walked away.
Arya was heard saying: “That’s not you”, which referenced season one of Game of Thrones when her father Ned Stark (Sean Bean) said that she would become a lady, leading her to state: “That’s not me.”
Showrunner D.B. Weiss confirmed the reference to Vanity Fair, telling the publication: “Arya’s not domesticated and it makes total sense her wolf wouldn’t be either.
“Once the wolf walks away, at first she’s heartbroken to have come this close. Then she realizes the wolf is doing exactly what she would do if she were that wolf.”
That was not the only reunion in the second instalment, Arya met up with Hot Pie (Ben Hawkey) at a tavern where he baked her a meat pie and she hinted she’d disposed of some Freys in a similar way.
The episode also saw Arya learning that her brother Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was at Winterfell, forcing her to turn away from her mission to kill Cersei and return to her ancestral home.
However, she could well be disappointed when she finds her sister Sansa as Queen in the North and discovering that Jon is going to Dragonstone to form an alliance with Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).
A teaser for next week’s episode The Queen’s Justice showed Jon and the Mother of Dragons finally meeting up as they looked like they would form an alliance.
Game of Thrones airs on Sky Atlantic on Mondays at 2am & 9pm and is available to watch on NOW TV.
