The fifth season’s latest offering, titled Eastwatch, brought back fan-favourite character Gendry (played by Joe Dempsie) and saw a number of major players continue to move pieces around the hypothetical chess board.
However in a huge bombshell for the series, fans have speculated that the moment Jon (Kit Harington) experiences a Doctor DoLittle moment with Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) beloved “child” Drogon, wherein the prickly dragon allows the King of the North to stroke him and even seems to soften his gaze, is mirroring a scene with Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) from season six episode two.
Back before The Mother of Dragons had taken it upon herself to ride her fire-breathers into devastating battle against the Lannisters, the Targaryen Queen had flown away from Meereen and left behind Tyrion with her other “babies” Rhaegal and Viserion.
The dragons were frustrated and angry after being chained up in the dark underground, but when Tyrion visited the enormous beasts with the intention of conquering his fear, not only did they let him feed them but he got close enough to stroke them as well.
The similarity is too big to overlook, as book viewers are already aware that Daenerys’ father – the Mad King Aerys – had been fond of Tyrion’s mother Joanna Lannister during the period that Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) was the Hand of the King at King’s Landing.
It therefore wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to imagine that Aerys may have raped the wife of his most trusted adviser without Tywin finding out.
On the other hand, if the head of the Lannisters had been aware of the truth about his son all along, it could explain the real reason why he was filled with such hatred for his third “offspring”.
If the theories are true, the subtle drop-in about Tyrion’s parentage would be the biggest bombshell in a while for the HBO series, and show that the fantasy epic is lining up its three major players – Daenerys, Jon, and Tyrion – to each ride one of the mystical dragons and take their place as the rightful Targaryen leaders.
It would also prove true the books’ prophecy for the future of the creatures and who will be in power of the whole of Westeros and the kingdoms.
Meanwhile, the latest episode also saw Gilly (Hannah Murray) potentially confirm the truth of who will be sitting on the Iron Throne at the end of the series, as she read out the High Septon Maynard’s diary.
The reveal explained that Rhaehar Targaryen’s annulment led to the Prince marrying someone else in a private ceremony in Dorne, who could have been Jon’s mother Lyanna Stark (Aisling Francis).
Game of Thrones continues on HBO next Monday at 9pm in the US and will be simulcast at 2am on Sky Atlantic in the UK. Catch up with seasons one to six on NOW TV.
