Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon doesn't want to play villain… as he takes on role of Hitler

However, the 31-year-old actor, who is best known as the sadistic Ramsay Bolton in the HBO drama, might have a slight problem: his new role sees him playing a young version of Adolf Hitler.

The Welsh A-lister will be playing the Nazi dictator in his younger years as he tries to make it as an artist in the Sky Arts anthology series Urban Myths in an episode called Adolf Hitler: The Artist.

He will be starring opposite Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, who plays Hitler’s friend and watch him try and fail to make it as a painter.

“Obviously I’m very wary of playing villainous roles… but he’s not really become a villain yet,” the Misfits star explained in a recent interview.

He continued: “People will automatically make that connection and go, ‘oh he’s just playing another villain’, but I don’t think it’s like that in The Artist.

“What I wanted to try and make was a young man who wanted to be an artist, and he just happens to be Adolf Hitler.”

Iwan told the Radio Times that he tried to “stay away” from what people knew about the führer and concentrate on the character trying to become an artist.

Nevertheless, he is more than grateful for his role in Game of Thrones, which he was in for four seasons before meeting a typically brutal demise after inflicting torture on many others.

Fans punched the air after Ramsay was eaten by his own dogs at the end of season six when his wife Sansa Stark (played by Sophie Turner) set the ravenous pack on him.

The actor and musician said that his maniacal alter-ego met a “just ending” and that he was “sad” when he departed from the fantasy juggernaut.

“I do have to be very careful now, because I don’t want to be typecast,” he explained, adding that he had been offered a lot of villain roles since Game of Thrones.

Iwan said it was ironic he was now getting offered darker roles because the character was one of the few baddies he’d played during his career, which has seen him winning an Olivier Award for his role in Spring Awakening as well as playing the socially awkward Simon Bellamy in E4’s BAFTA-winning teen drama Misfits.

While Ramsay may have departed from Game of Thrones, his spectre looms large on those he has wounded, including Sansa.

Actress Sophie, 20, recently hinted that her character could develop a taste for killing after being treated cruelly by both Ramsay and Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson).

Game of Thrones season 7 airs later this year.
