An image of the Jon Snow actor alongside writer Martin has sparked a viral frenzy online as viewers are now convinced that the pair must be related due to their identical features.
However, the “yearbook” snap may not be all that it seems as the photo of Martin cannot be traced back to any yearbooks.
The image first became an internet sensation when it was posted on Reddit and Imgur in July, but has resurfaced on Twitter ahead of tonight’s finale.
Some fans even suggested that Martin has kept Jon Snow alive in the books because Harington looks like him on screen.
The 68-year-old novelist features an autobiographical blog section on his website including school photos, but he appears with a clean shaven look with short hair, in contrast to the “yearbook” photograph.
Looking similar to Harington when he was younger in his own posts, it is no wonder that fans were left shocked by the comparisons.
Fans of the HBO fantasy drama instantly took to social media after the snap went viral to discuss whether it was real or Photoshopped.
One viewer tweeted: “Some writers put themselves into their characters. Kinda,” as another joked: “Not a Targaryen, a Martin.”
A third teased: “Heh, we’ve all been debating whether or not Rhaegar was his father but it was G.R.R.M all along!”
“This is why he hasn’t killed him off,” added another, as a fifth wrote: “THEYRE THE SAME PERSON.”
“If this show ends with R. R. Martin waking up from a dream I am going to be p****sed,” raged another.
It comes as a new theory suggests Daenerys Targaryen will fall pregnant with Jon Snow’s baby during tonight’s finale.
Game of Thrones season seven concludes on HBO this Sunday in the US and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic on Monday at 2am.
