The first instalment of the BBC comedy will see Matt land himself in big trouble when he oversteps the mark on his new gameshow The Box with another contestant.
Speaking about the shocking moment, which will air during the final moments of the episode, Matt revealed that “nothing” surprises him on the show anymore.
In fact, the actor told press including Express.co.uk it is his ideas which are rejected by the show’s bosses.
Talking about the final run at the launch of Episodes last year, he explained: “On this show, no, nothing shocks me.
“There hasn’t really been… there was one time, there was one joke that I was just uncomfortable with but aside from that I have pitched stuff to them that they said, ‘No, that’s disgusting, we’re not doing that.’
“And I’m like, ‘That’s worse than what you wrote?’ and they’re like, ‘Much worse.’ So, no it hasn’t really been an issue.”
Meanwhile, his co-star Tamsin, who stars as Beverly Lincoln, confessed that she had some trouble with the scripts, which led to one of her scenes being cut.
“It’s mostly to do with the fact that we have a different language because we are British and they’re American and speak a different language,” she commented.
“So, it will be when I say, I don’t know what a night stand is, and then they laugh at me and say it’s a bedside table.
“But then of course you try to put it in the script and you say, ‘Sorry, it’s a bedside table. I wouldn’t say night stand because I’m talking to my husband who is also British and speaks my language and it’s a bedside table.’
“And then you go to try and say the lines and they don’t work because the rhythm of the sentence has two syllables. It’s gone now because I couldn’t say bedside table with any kind of authority.”
Stephen, who stars as Tamsin’s on-screen husband Sean Lincoln, added: “They [bosses] bring the basis of [the script] and we basically make up the words.
“If we change an ‘and’ to a ‘but’ there is a conference meeting, their scripts are worked on and they are worked on very carefully, every line has its own rhythm and the words are in there for a specific reason.
“They are receptive to being pitched ideas, we all pitch ideas every now and then but most often we are told no.”
Tonight’s episode sees the trio hit “rock bottom” as they’re forced to work on projects they do not enjoy.
The official synopsis for the first instalment reads: “Everyone is at rock bottom. And then Matt makes things worse.
“Several months have passed since the end of the last episode. Matt’s show The Box is now a runaway hit.
“Unfortunately for Matt, this means that he must have daily contact with his producer, Merc Lapidus. If anything, the animosity between the two has got worse over time.
“As Matt is the star of the show, he would seem to have some leverage over Merc, but he makes a decision that puts him right in the palm of his producer’s sweaty hand.”
Episode airs tonight on BBC Two at 10pm.
