The Emmerdale actress admitted that she found the scenes where she had to bully schoolboy Arthur Thomas (played by Alfie Clarke) difficult to film, being a mother herself.
“When she was bullying poor Arthur I thought, ‘I’m not comfortable with this; how far is this bullying going to go?'” she told What’s On TV. “Because I’ve got a little boy of my own.”
“But the director, Di Patrick was fantastic,” Gillian added. “She’s a mother herself and she said, ‘Emma’s just trying to control the boy in the nicest way that she can because if she doesn’t, she’ll lose her own sons.'”
Meanwhile, fans were left fearing that Gabby (Rosie Bentham) could become the character to fall victim to Emma next week after she pretended to haunt her in tonight’s dramatic episode of the ITV soap.
Praying on Emma’s superstitions that her late husband James (Bill Ward) was contacting her through mysterious signs, Gabby set up a walkie talkie system in the church to dupe the unsuspecting widow into believing that she was God, damning her for her evil behaviour.
“Dear Lord our Father,” Emma whispered, kneeling at the altar. “Thank you for looking after James and letting him send these signs to me. They mean the world because they’re proof that he’s forgiven me and that he’s finally at peace.”
“No peace for you,” Gabby murmured through her makeshift sound system, her voice echoing creepily around the church. “You are wicked.
“You are a sinner, I know what you did,” she added. “You are evil. You will burn in the fired of hell.”
After a few minutes of fear, however, Emma appeared to figure out that she was being tricked, after following the sound of the mysterious voice to find an open door where Gabby had fled.
The episode concluded with Emma praying, seeming to threaten that harm could come to Gabby for her cruel prank, leaving viewers worried that it could hint at the death to come.
“Be careful Gabby! Emma is more dangerous than you think,” one tweeted, while another gasped: “Oh dear is Gabby now in danger?”
Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 7pm and 8pm on ITV.
