A rare 50p coin has sold on eBay for a whopping sum of money on February 17.
The coin, which has a misprint, is dated from the 1980s. Minting errors such as this happen when there is a mistake during the printing process.
This error is known as a misstrike, when the coin is not stamped in the correct place.
Seller of the item Litebites said of the coin: “Spectacular and rare example of a genuine mis struck misprinted 50 pence coin from 1980.”
They added: “Relative worked in a bank and this coin was found in a bag of uncirculated 50p pieces at that time.”
The seller added they have gone to lengths to validate the coin, although did not mention how it was validated.
They said: “We have not had it validated by Royal Mint purely because we want a quick sale but prospective buyers can be 100% assured of authenticity.
“We have been advised by coin experts that it is obviously genuine and that collectors can buy with confidence.”
Twenty bids were made by eight bidders over the duration of the week on the coin, which was listed with a starting price of £200.
Rare coins can sell for huge amounts on line.
The most expensive coin ever was sold at auction for £7,171,581. It was the Flowing Hair Dollar.
The most expensive UK coin ever to be sold is the Edward III Florin, which was sold for £486,846.
Another rare coin that has sold for a large sum recently is the Team GB swimming 50p coin.
This coin is the Team GB 50p coin, which was released ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
It was designed by Tim Sharp and has the image of a swimmer with the Team GB logo about it.
However, this coin is not particularly rare. It is has a mintage of 6,400,000.
