EastEnders viewers accuse BBC of 'RECYCLING' story lines as Den and Angie 'return'

As Steven Beale (played by Aaron Sidwell) and Lauren Branning’s (Jacqueline Jossa) fiery relationship has been a roller coaster these past couple of weeks, fans believe that they may head down the same path as EastEnders’ most iconic couple.

Ian Beale’s (Adam Woodyatt) eldest was last seen stalking, spying and even lying about a brain tumour to stop Lauren from leaving him.

Steven even roped in Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald) to help make his illness look convincing, using a brain scan from a dog to show Lauren he is “seriously ill”.

However, some viewers felt that the bizarre storyline has been seen before, particularly in 1986 when Den (Leslie Grantham) and Angie’s (Anita Dobson) marriage hit rock bottom.

The flame-haired resident told Den she was dying after she found out about one of his many affairs in a desperate attempt to keep him.

It worked though, as Den left Jan and took Angie on a whirlwind trip on the Orient Express, only for the latter to be served divorce papers on Christmas Day for cheating.

Viewers have now taken to Twitter to discuss a potentially “recycled” storyline, suggesting that Steven and Lauren could split up: “Didn’t Angie do this storyline in the eighties? #EastEnders.”

Another agreed, asking: “Are they recycling old Den & Angie scripts for Lauren & Steven? Confirmation when Steven books tickets for the Orient Express #EastEnders.”

A third tweeted: “Talk about recycling storylines. Those of us who are old enough will remember when Angie lied to Den about having cancer #EastEnders.”

A fourth commented: “#EastEnders Stephen I have cancer. Angie I have cancer – this story has been done before?”

Will Steven and Lauren’s relationship end in disaster or will they have learnt from Den and Angie’s past mistakes?

EastEnders continues tonight on BBC One at 7.30pm.
