EastEnders is famous for its dramatic storylines, but as the businessman continues his destruction of Albert Square, a remorseful Max deals with his actions by harming himself.
Speaking about Max’s self-harm to The Sun Online, Jake, 45, said: “I’ve always seen that as if there’s any guilt about what he’s doing, any remorse or if he feels bad about his actions, that’s his way of dealing with it.
“Max is always a multi-layered, interesting character to play. That’s why people like to watch him because he’s unpredictable.
“But at the real heart of it there’s just a guy who’s incredibly lost and very isolated. He’s dealing with it in the only way he sees that he can. Obviously it’s not right but it might be great fun to watch.”
Max, who moved to Walford over 11 years ago, is at the heart of this year’s Christmas special – which is rumoured to be one of its most explosive episodes.
The salesman was wrongly convicted of murdering Lucy Beale back in October 2015, and returned to the Square on Christmas Eve last year.
Determined to destroy the lives of anyone who saw him wrongfully imprisoned, Max has already sought revenge on his brother Jack and the Beale family.
And after being shunned by all the residents on Albert Square, a humiliated Max begins to harm himself.
Last night, the unhinged character threatened to murder Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), before attempting to strangle a terrified Ian with fairy lights.
But the scheming East Ender has even more destruction in store for Walford locals, with the character reigniting a passionate affair with Stacey Fowler.
The EastEnders Christmas Day special airs on December 25 BBC One at 9pm.
