Dunkirk news: Harry Styles and co-stars open up on 'pure PANIC' on set during filming

The Christopher Nolan-helmed epic is due out this month and puts Styles in his first big screen acting role.

A new video sees him speaking alongside Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn Carney and Jack Lowden about the intense experience.

“It’s not ‘pretend there’s an explosion going off over here’ – it’s all going on,” Styles recalled of the beach scenes.

“I think that just means you get natural reactions to stuff.”

Of Nolan, he beamed: “He leads by example so much. He’s like the first one there, the last one to leave.”

Whitehead said: “I was coming out onto the beach and there was 1300 extras dressed in battle gear, there was spitfires flying overhead, destroyers overhead, the beach was set-dressed, and there were explosions going off in the sand.

“It was just so real. It was the closest you can come to putting yourself in that situation, and the pure panic and terror.”

Nolan himself said of his young stars: “The traditional thing in Hollywood movies is to cast 28, 29, 30-year-olds and pretend they’re younger.

“We wanted kids who would experience these events the way people would have at the time.

“We needed interesting fresh faces to do that.”

Dunkirk is out on July 21.
