While she doesn’t wear it all the time, it’s reported the Duchess owns a Merci Maman necklace which features a gold-plated disc inscribed with the words “George Alexander Louis” on it.
Alongside it is a smaller charm engraved with a “W” for William, as well as a charm in the shape of a little boy.
According to The Mirror, the Duchess’s sister Pippa bought her the necklace back in 2013 as a memento for the birth of her son Prince George.
But there’s a further meaning behind the piece of jewellery.
Princess Diana, wore a similar necklace, which was given to her by Prince Charles, and it included the word “William” engraved on the front.
In a blog post about the necklace, Merci Maman explained: “Upon the birth of Prince William in 1982, Prince Charles gave Diana the gift of a golf pendant engraved with their new son’s name, which she always wore close to her heart.
“In 2013, Pippa Middleton continued this family tradition by giving her sister Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge, our Personalised Duchess Necklace to celebrate the birth of Prince George.”
The necklace isn’t the only tradition the Duchess has upheld in memory of Diana.
There are some other hidden meanings behind some of the Duchess’s accessories.
She is rarely seen without a clutch bag at official engagements, but rather than it just being down to a fashionable choice, Kate is believed to have a clutch bag at such occasions for another reason.
Myka Meier, the founder of Beaumont Etiquette, told Good Housekeeping the Duchess holds her bag in front of her in both hands when shaking hands might be awkward.
