THE 41-year-old actor debuted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2016’s Doctor Strange.
And having cameoed in Thor Ragnarok a year later, his Sorcerer Supreme returns for Avengers Infinity War at the end of the month.
But is Cumberbatch planning on returning for Doctor Strange 2?
During an interview with Radio Times, the star admitted he’s not sure it will even happen.
Cumberbatch said: “I know the latest is that I might not make it out of [Avengers Infinity War] alive.
“It’s only [written at] the end of the first film, ‘Doctor Strange will be back.’
“I have been back, in Thor: Ragnarok, and obviously in [Avengers: Infinity War].”
“So there’s nothing to say, either contractually or otherwise, that he’s coming back again.”
He added: “I haven’t seen the film. so God knows, that might be it.
“They might have just teased me into a London fan-fest because, ‘Oh look, you’re in a bit of the film.’ And that might be all of it.”
It seems Cumberbatch is playing it coy. After all, last Autumn Marvel boss Kevin Feige confirmed Doctor Strange 2 will happen.
According to MovieWeb, the producer said: “Certainly, we would love to tell more about the Strange story [in a sequel]. Yes. It won’t be for a while.
“Our focus is on the next six movies. Finishing the first three phases, getting Untitled Avengers out into the world [in 2019] before publicly focusing on anything else.”
Also with Iron Man, Captain America and Thor expected to bow out by death or retirement in Avengers 4, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and Black Panther will be needed to lead the way for Phase 4.
After all, surely Marvel will be wanting each character to complete their trilogies alongside Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
And let’s not forget Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, who is being introduced in 2019.
Avengers Infinity War will be released in UK cinemas on April 26, 2018.
