Tuesday’s NTAs saw Suranne Jones pick up the award in the Best Drama Performance category for her role as the titular character in Doctor Foster.
The gripping series also picked up the gong for Best Drama at the star-studded ceremony.
The victory has been said to spur on BBC bosses to begin work for season three given the positive reception.
“After its ratings success last year commissioners were always keen for it to come back and although its early days they have given it the green light,” a source told The Sun.
“Suranne is extremely busy with other projects at the moment but bosses are trying to pin her down for some potential filming dates.
“It’s looking like it would film next year at the earliest.”
Season two ended in a shock dramatic twist as Gemma and Simon’s (played by Bertie Carvel) son Tom (Tom Taylor) ran away from his warring parents.
Writer Mike Bartlett teased a return at the close of the second series.
He said to Radio Times: “Tom’s gone. So there’s a question mark. And I think it works as an end to this series and all the things that have been going on. Clearly, there’s potential there. But obviously, there would have to be lots of conversations.
“We need to talk – Suranne and I and lots of other people need to have lots of conversations and we’ll see.”
However, Suranne rebuffed suggestions of the show’s return late last year when she appeared on the New Year’s Eve edition of The Graham Norton Show.
She said: “There are no plans because everyone is busy and I am working all of next year so I just don’t know.”
The first run of the programme scooped the same accolades at the 2016 NTAs.
The former Coronation Street actress also won a BAFTA Award in the same year for her portrayal of the scorned woman.
Season one of Doctor Foster is currently available to watch on Netflix.
The National Television Awards 2018 are available to watch on ITV Hub.
