Bertie Carvel, who portrays the villainous property entrepreneur in the BBC drama, suggested that his character could actually stay faithful to his new wife Kate Parks (played by Jodie Comer).
Speaking about whether the phrase “one a cheater, always a cheater” applied to Simon, the British actor told press including Express.co.uk at a recent screening, he said: “It would be very depressing to go through life thinking there was no such thing as a second chance.
“I actually think the theme of forgiveness is a very power that’s reverberating deeply through both of these series.”
However, Bertie did not seem to be worried about becoming the most hated man in Britain as he reprised his role as the devious Simon.
“Now I feel very unprepared now you’ve asked that,” he joked as he went on to say: “I’m not is the answer to your question.”
Bertie continued: “I’ll hope no one recognises me or maybe they have a more nuanced understanding of the character. Maybe you’re going to love him by the end of the series, who know? You live in hope.”
Co-star Suranne Jones – who plays the titular Gemma Foster – went on to tease that season two would see both ex spouses coming off badly in their bid for revenge on one another.
“Gemma doesn’t behave well, and before she did that through hurt and now she’s channelling her anger [differently].
“It becomes dark and twisted, so she doesn’t believe in redemption for [husband Simon] but that’s the beauty of our story.”
Reflecting on her character, the 39-year-old actress said had her character had moved on but was still “comfortable” in herself as she had “put up her walls”.
The opening episode of Doctor Foster will see the story pick up two years after the events of the season one finale and fans are set to be hit with a startling twist as Simon moved back to Gemma’s hometown with his new wife.
Doctor Foster airs on BBC One on Tuesdays at 9pm.
