The 54-year-old star rubbished the rumours that the show was getting cancelled during an appearance on ITV’s Lorraine today.
Speaking to host Lorraine Kelly, he said: “We aim to do bigger and better things all the time. We’ve got some amazing projects coming up this year.
“We’ve got six commissions till the end of the year. We’ve got some really amazing ones coming up and then outside that I’ve been looking at doing some bigger things.”
His words prompted Lorraine, 57, to ask him: “Look, I heard a rumour that it might be getting cancelled.”
Nick responded: “No, I was asked whether we were doing another series and I said we’ve got six commissions until Christmas.
“I’m fairly confident it will come back but you know how this works: if people don’t watch it and the viewing figures aren’t great, then you don’t get to make more programmes.”
Lorraine firmly told him: “The viewing figures are fantastic,” to which he conceded: “They are.”
However, he called on fans and audiences to watch the BBC programme to ensure it stayed on the air.
“But people can help by just watching. The longer people watch, the longer people are engaged by the programme, the more houses we get to do,” he explained.
Nick went on to say: “It’s a very simple, straight-forward relationship. Of course I hope we go on, we’ve been going for 18 years. It would be nice to get to 20.”
“I think you’ll get to 20 and beyond,” Lorraine told him confidently.
The interview proved to be an eventful one after the show suffered a power cut midway through and the duo were plunged into darkness.
Luckily, the lights were eventually restored and the chat could continue.
Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 8.30am.
