Death in Paradise star forced to exit after severe stunt injury during filming

Death in Paradise’s DS Camille Bordey (played by Sara Martins) appeared in seasons one to four of the hit BBC comedy-drama. But what fans may not know is she was absent from a couple of episodes in the debut series after snapping her Achilles heel during a stunt.

Speaking about this unfortunate event which occurred at the very start of filming, Danny John-Jules who played Dwayne Myers said a “leading lady [was] flown out in the middle of the series” to replace Sara.

Ben Miller, who played Richard Poole in the first 17 episodes added: “We had to fly her straight back.

“She arrived, then she had a bereavement in the family, and had to fly straight back.”

Danny continued: “Another actress had to learn the part on the plane on the way over.

Sara featured in Ben’s exit storyline, which occurred in the first episode of season three, and she said this changed the job for her.

“When I first arrived on the programme I was this French girl guest,” she detailed.

“The show was really on Ben’s shoulders and I followed him.

“I’m still really grateful to him for making this the best job.

“When Ben left I realised it was on me to try and be the locomotive he’d been, as I knew the show’s dynamic, my character, and everyone,” she said.

Sara had her own departure a few years later, which left fans stunned as her exit was kept a secret.

“We like to have some big surprises in the show to maintain the audience’s interest!” she explained.

“I’ve loved everything about the show.

“But the only way to grow in life is to take risks, even if it means losing something you love, or leaving a place that’s comfortable,” she told What’s On TV.

Death in Paradise is available to watch on the BBC iPlayer now.
