She said: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor.
“He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.
“This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”
Nevertheless this may not be the end for Sir Daniel, having giving up acting in late 1990s to become a cobbler, he was eventually persuaded to return to the screen by Martin Scorsese for 2002’s Gangs of New York.
Sir Daniel has also completed another film since 2012’s Lincoln called Phantom Thread.
Teaming up once again with There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson, the drama is set in London’s fashion world of the 1950s.
Sir Daniel plays Charles James, who is commissioned to design for members of high society and the Royal Family.
Phantom Thread is reased in UK cinemas on December 25, 2017.
