Whether fans are ready for it or not, the beginning of Aidan’s (played by Shayne) exit, with Coronation Street producer Kate Oates revealing the actor was the one who created his character’s final scene.
“The final scene in which we see Aidan is entirely of Shayne’s creation,” she told Metro.
“Originally we were just going to see Aidan at the pub with his family. Life’s going on around him and he’s just completely dis-engaged.
“But Shayne instinctively said: ‘That feels really wrong to me. I think I need another moment and Aidan needs it too,’” she explained.
“So we added a final scene of him breaking down at the flat.
“Now when I watch these episodes, they wouldn’t feel complete without it.”
The heart-wrenching story will see Johnny Connor (Richard Hawley) finding Aidan dead in his flat.
It will become clear that Aidan has been struggling with his mental health for months and eventually decides to take his own life.
It was recently revealed he will pay a visit to his loved ones before he takes his life.
Most notably, he will present his dad with a golf club membership shortly before he plans on leaving for Spain.
She later went on to discuss the subtleties of the storyline, and how well Shayne played his role.
She continued: “The challenge for Shayne was that so much of his performance was about subtext and subtlety.
“I think he explored that so beautifully and with such depth – he was fantastic.
“I’d also like to say that when we approached Shayne with the storyline, he was gracious, brilliant and professional. He’s been a joy to work with, a brilliant company member and a brilliant actor.”
Aidan’s final scenes will air tonight, while Wednesday’s episodes will focus on the aftermath of his death.
