Stephen Colbert had some choice words for President Donald Trump on Thursday — but they’re probably not the words you were expecting.
“I love you,” Colbert mouthed to the camera during a monologue directed at POTUS. The acerbic term of endearment came in response to a recent Time magazine interview conducted with Trump, who suggested that Colbert’s show “was dying” and “they were going to take him off television” before “he started attacking me.” He also referred to the Late Show host as a “filthy,” “no-talent guy” in the wake of his controversial May 1 monologue, during which he insinuated that the president was Vladimir Putin’s “c—k holster.”
“You’re not wrong: I do occasionally use adult language,” Colbert said. “And I do it in public, instead of in the privacy of an Access Hollywood bus.
“Making jokes about you has been good for ratings,” he continued, acknowledging his recent resurgence versus Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon. “It’s almost as if the majority of Americans didn’t want you to be president. But you know who’s got really bad ratings these days? You do. Terrible approval numbers. I hear they’re thinking about switching your time slot with Mike Pence.”
Not quite finished, Colbert then suggested how Trump could ensure his ratings success is short-lived.
“Since all of my success is clearly based on talking about you, if you really want to take me down, there’s an obvious way: resign,” he suggested, only to be met with deafening applause. “Sir, if you did that, what would I talk about then? Except your resignation, because that’d be fun.”
