Captain Marvel is setting the pace for Marvel movies, with its brand new trailer igniting an unprecedented level of excitement. Fans have been dissecting the two minute and 18-second video for any and all hints at movie plot points. From the heroes outfits to the dialogue spoken, everything has been parsed. But one small detail, seemingly insignificant, may be more than just a throwaway piece of humour…
What is the deal with Captain Marvel’s cat?
Keen-eyed fans spotted the cat’s debut appearance in the first Captain Marvel poster.
With the second trailer, however, fans have been given the gift that is Chewie in motion.
Towards the end of the trailer, a young Nick Fury can be seen petting a ginger cat, presumably belonging to Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel).
Fury lifts the tag of the cat enough for audiences to see its name: Goose.
CAPTAIN MARVEL TRAILER: DID YOU SEE CAPTAIN MARVEL’S HELMET AND MOHAWK
Captain Marvel shoots Fury an impatient look and he pets the cat once more before walking away.
The cat, and its name, are huge nods to the comics – and to a potential sequel.
In the comics, Captain Marvel has a cat called Chewie, named after Star Wars’ Chewbacca.
She thinks the cat is just a domesticated house cat, but it turns out to be a Flerken.
CAPTAIN MARVEL: DOES RONAN THE ACCUSER RETURN IN CAPTAIN MARVEL?
Flerken look like normal house-cats, but in reality are from the alternate reality Earth-58163.
They lay over one hundred eggs at a time, can teleport, have tentacles that extend from their mouths, and human-level intellect.
Inside their mouths are not only tentacles but pocket dimensions and lots of pointy teeth.
Chewie was first introduced to the world of Captain Marvel in Giant-Size Ms Marvel Vol 1 from 2006.
Rocket Raccoon is the one to tell Captain Marvel the truth about her precious pet.
CAPTAIN MARVEL VS THOR: WHERE IS CAPTAIN MARVEL FROM? WHO IS STRONGER?
At first, she didn’t believe Rocket Raccoon but then Chewie laid 117 eggs and Rocket’s claims were proven true.
The Captain Marvel movie has changed Danvers’ cat’s name from Chewie to Goose.
The change is a nod to the character in Top Gun played by Anthony Edwards.
Top Gun is known to have inspired much of Captain Marvel’s aesthetic, so the move away from a nod to Star Wars makes sense.
A prevailing theory is that Fury will lose his eye to Goose, but fans will have to wait till the spring to find out.
Captain Marvel is out in cinemas on March 8, 2019.
