The Call The Midwife actress bowed out of the BBC drama on Sunday night leaving viewers bereft.
Speaking about her exit on Lorraine today, Charlotte revealed her biggest regret following her decision to leave.
She confessed that she had hoped she’d be able to watch the episode without becoming emotional but admitted she broke down in tears.
“I knew it was going to happen and I still howled like a child, which feels really weird,” Charlotte explained.
“I have know for a long time and I was wishing I wouldn’t cry, as I think there’s something weirdly narcissistic about crying about your own death.
“But it was just everything, it was saying goodbye to the show, I love it so much. But it was done beautifully and I feel really glad and really proud that I got to say goodbye in that way.”
Revealing why she felt she had to leave the series, the 28-year-old commented: “It was such a hard decision to make. I love it. It’s the most wonderful job.
“It was just the sort of time to go, I think. My character Barbara had had such a gorgeous arc.”
When asked if she thought her on-screen husband Tom Hereward (played by Jack Ashton) could move on with Trixie (Helen George), Charlotte joked it couldn’t happen.
“Over my dead body!” she exclaimed.
“No, I don’t know. I think, she’s got so much to work out.”
Charlotte previously revealed that she didn’t want to get too comfortable in her role as Nurse Barbara.
She told the Mirror: “This feels like a good time to go before I become too complacent.
“I love the show, I love everyone I work with – there’s no negative reason behind why I’m going.”
The star, who previously appeared in Fresh Meat, went on to add: “I’ve been locked in to three different shows for about five years, which is so lucky and amazing.
“But there was a possibility I could try new things and I thought, when will be the right time to go?”
