The biggest night in British music wrapped up with a spectacular closing show by Pink (or P!nk), who was one of the big winners. It was opened by Hugh Jackman, performing the opening number from The Greatest Showman. The soundtrack is the biggest selling album of 2018 in the UK, but there were no awards on the night for the film and cast. Instead, a diverse array of stars picked up the thirteen main awards.
Noteworthy moments included Calvin Harris making his BRITs debut with a collaboration with Dua Lipa, Sam Smith and Rag’n’Bone Man, before finally winning his first ever BRIT award for Best Single, after being nominated 16 times in the last ten years, and then adding Best Producer.
P!nk had a good reason to celebrate in her performance after collecting her Outstanding Contribution to Music award, the first non-Brit ever to do so.
Winning British Group for the second time, The 1975 also added the much coveted Mastercard British Album of the Year award while George Ezra took British Male Solo Artist and Tom Walker bagged British Breakthrough Act, voted by the public.
Jorja Smith followed her Critics’ Choice award in 2018 with British Female Solo Artist.
The BRITs Global Success award is based purely on the global sales success of a British artist and went to Ed Sheeran for a second year, after the phenomenal success of his third album Divide which racked up certified sales of 10.5 million.
Ariana Grande was announced as Best International Female and Drake won his second BRIT award for Best International Male. Best International Group went to The Carters, their first as a group – although Beyonce and Jay Z have both won BRIT awards as individuals previously.
British Artist Video of the Year was once again determined by public social vote and this year the winner was Little Mix for ‘Woman Like Me’, which the girls performed earlier in the show.
